Trump Media & Technology Group’s social media platform, Truth Social, has turned into an environment where scammers thrive. Reports revealed malicious actors have executed various illegal activities targeting the platform’s users.
A new analysis shows how threat actors leverage the platform’s features and user trust to launch widespread cyberattacks that lead to conflicts.
The researchers noted that the scammers took advantage of the platform’s sudden surge of user growth and community-focused infrastructure. Moreover, the site invites users to join groups based on their interests, allowing threat actors to discover and contact other users on a large scale.
Truth Social users are susceptible to different cybercriminal activities.
According to investigations, various malicious entities have infested the Truth Social platform, endangering its user base.
This setting and high user trust in the platform’s “Truths” have enabled cybercriminals to spread. A recent tally shows that the majority of site users trust the news and information to be mainly true, indicating a concerning level of user confidence.
Furthermore, the researchers confirmed several schemes that have already occurred on the social media site. Users could now encounter malicious activities, such as phishing, investment fraud, and advance fee scams.
An observation claimed that in a single day, Truth Social accounts in the United States received 40 unwanted communications from scammers executing a range of scams.
Also, scammers use Truth Social to bypass common email security measures. They use the platform to divert traffic and avoid discovery. One example of this activity is phishing emails from hacked accounts that could redirect victims to phishing pages via Truth Social links.
The FTC emphasises the growing risk of social media fraud, citing reported losses that reached at least $2.7 billion in recent years. However, authorities warn that the actual cost of these frauds could be more if they account for the global impact.
Social media users must know the importance of effective detection and mitigation measures to address these dangers. It is also critical for organisations to use new technologies to detect, disrupt, and eliminate threats to protect their customers.
