The New York Post confirmed last week that it suffered a cybercriminal attack after its Twitter account and websites were utilised by an individual to target US politicians. According to the new publishing firm, the attacker targeted US politicians by posting violent messages and racist comments.

The company said they have an ongoing investigation into the cause of the attack and immediately deleted the tweets published last week.

Some of the offensive headlines and tweets were directed by the attacker to multiple notable US politicians like NY Governor Kathy Hochul, Texas Governor Gregg Abbot, NYC Mayor Eric Adams, D-NY Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, R-IL Rep. Adam Kinzinger, and the US President Joe Biden.

Researchers have yet to identify the New York Post hacker.

There are no details on how the individual controlled the New York Post’s social media account and website. However, some experts said the incident followed a similar track where an attacker breached the content management systems last month.

In a separate incident, The Fast Company was forced to take down its site for a couple of weeks after the attacker posted racist comments to its mobile device user via the Apple News platform. The attack was then claimed by a member of the Breached hacking community called Thrax.

The New York Post and News Corp’s owner also revealed that persistent cyberattacks targeted them in the first few months of this year. The attack that researchers discovered at the start of the year has enabled the threat actors to access emails and documents owned by News Corp staff, including multiple journalists.

Fox News, New York Post, the News UK British newspaper publisher, and the Wall Street Journal are the most well-known News Corp properties.

The New York Post’s initial investigation showed that an employee executed the unauthorised publishing of malicious comments. The company explained that they were taking appropriate actions for the alleged employee.

Today, they deleted all malicious and racial comments on the company’s website and Twitter page.
