The notorious MOVEit data breach has plagued US orgs

The massive MOVEit data breach has reached and compromised the most prominent industries and organisations across the United States.

Based on reports, the primary target of this incident is a data firm called Westat, which provides critical services to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for survey administration. However, the impact of this breach has reached various entities, impacting numerous sectors, including government agencies, airlines, educational institutions, financial organisations, and healthcare providers.

As a result, troves of sensitive data, such as credit card numbers, personally identifiable information (PII), and social security numbers (SSNs), have suffered exposure that could lead to various cybercriminal attacks.

The MOVEit data breach attacks did not spare government agencies, with the US Department of Justice finding itself among the victims. Moreover, cybercriminals have accessed the email addresses of 632,000 employees from various agencies.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM), through a Freedom of Information Act request, disclosed that hackers gained access to email addresses affiliated with government employee surveys and internal agency tracking codes by exploiting MOVEit.

This unfortunate incident mainly affected the Defense Department, including branches like the Air Force, the Army, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and the Joint Staff officials.

The notorious Cl0p ransomware gang emerged as the culprit behind this widespread breach. Their exploitation of the MOVEit vulnerability resulted in the exposure of stolen data, impacting hundreds of government entities and businesses globally.

These hacks led numerous organisations to scramble to address the security vulnerabilities. The MOVEit admins have already released a patch to repair the flaw, but many organisations have yet to apply the fix, leaving them vulnerable to potential cyberattacks.

The true extent of the damage caused by this massive data breach campaign that started in May remains a mystery. Still, it is possible that hackers gained access to classified data against multiple critical entities, raising concerns about national security.
