Sysco US Food Distributor Data Breach Personal Data Cyberattack

One of the world’s largest food distribution companies, Sysco, has admitted that it suffered a data breach incident earlier this year. The perpetrators, during the attack, acquired information owned by the business, its customers, and employee.

The food distributor stated in the breach notification that a cybersecurity event occurred within their systems last March. The attackers accessed their systems without authorisation and claimed to have stolen important information.

The affected entity also confirmed the security breach in a 10-Q quarterly report they filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission this month. The initial investigation revealed that the infiltrators extracted troves of data, including employees and personal data, along with business transactions.

However, the company assured everyone that they would continue investigating the cybersecurity issue and try to disclose additional information regarding the attack since it is their obligation to their customers and employees.

Sysco claims that the attackers could have nabbed some personal details owned by relevant individuals connected to their company.

Sysco claims that the hackers acquired information that could impact their operations and numerous individuals during the breach. Some confirmed affected data includes payroll transactions, social security numbers, account numbers, and full names.

The company has already employed a third-party security team to aid them with their investigation. In addition, they have notified the law enforcement regarding the cyberattack. However, the company claimed the attack would not impact its business operations and customer service.

According to the company’s filing of 10-Q SEC, the incident has yet to be factored into their operations and services. Moreover, they have already notified the relevant individuals that there is no current threat to its networks. The company’s security team has already implemented additional safeguards to prevent a similar event from occurring soon.

Sysco operates in about 333 distribution facilities globally and employs more than 70,000 individuals. Furthermore, Sysco has 700,000 customer locations, like healthcare, academic facilities, and restaurants.

Unfortunately, the company has yet to reveal further details about the attack but will continue to investigate to provide clarifications of the incident.
