California Cryobank Data Breach Sperm Donor Facility Cyberattack Hacking

One of the US’ largest sperm donor firms, California Cryobank, disclosed to its clients that a data breach incident on their networks had exposed personal information.

The affected entity is a full-service sperm bank that offers frozen donor sperm and specialist reproductive services like egg and embryo storage. Moreover, it is the largest sperm bank in the United States, serving all 50 states and over 30 countries worldwide.

California Cryobank identified the data breach in April last year.

According to reports, California Cryobank discovered the malicious activity on its network in April 2024. The firm also stated that it immediately disconnected the infected PCs from the IT network to mitigate the hack’s effect.

More specifically, the company stated in the notification letters that it discovered the unauthorised entity had access to its IT environment and may have accessed and/or acquired files stored on some computer systems between April 20, 2024, and April 22, 2024.

Out of an abundance of caution, CCB deployed a thorough search and review of any files that may have been accessed and/or obtained due to the event.

However, after almost a year-long investigation, the company revealed that the attack exposed various client’s personal information, including names, bank accounts and routing numbers, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, payment card numbers, and/or health insurance information.

CCB offers 12-month credit monitoring to anyone whose Social Security or driver’s license information was compromised in the attack. It also implemented extra safeguards and security procedures to secure data and monitor its systems.

The primary procedure for donors is that once the sperm is donated, it is often done anonymously, with the donor given an identification number. This donor ID is then shared with any donor sperm recipients, and offspring can use it when they turn 18 to learn more about their biological father.

It is unclear whether donor information, including donor ID numbers, was compromised in the data breach, which would pose a serious privacy risk to those who had previously supplied sperm anonymously.

California Cryobank has yet to address inquiries regarding this matter.
