Ransomware Attack MathWorks Hackers Threat Alert

MathWorks, the developer of the MATLAB computing platform and Simulink simulation tools, has confirmed that it suffered a ransomware attack.

According to reports, malicious activity has disrupted its systems and online applications. The identity of the group behind the attack and whether any data was compromised remain unclear.

Based in Natick, Massachusetts, MathWorks acknowledged the incident in an update on its official website. The company reported that the attack affected its internal IT systems, temporarily making several customer-facing applications unavailable earlier this month.

In an update released nine days prior, MathWorks alerted users that multiple apps were encountering issues while the company investigated the cause.

Over the following days, it provided a series of updates, continually stating that the investigations were ongoing. A week ago, the company revealed that ThingSpeak, an IoT analytics platform, had also been affected.

MathWorks immediately restored some of the parts affected by the ransomware attack.

Investigations show that on May 21, MathWorks restored Single Sign-On (SSO) and multi-factor authentication (MFA) for user accounts.

However, it also confirmed that the attack still impacted additional services, such as Cloud Centre and MATLAB Mobile.

By May 23, MathWorks reported further disruptions, indicating that users could not create new accounts and that those who had not logged in since October 2024 faced difficulties accessing them.

On the other hand, 2FA verification was also noted to be functioning intermittently. While some systems have been restored, others remain offline or are currently being recovered with the assistance of external service providers.

The company is actively investigating and assessing the incident and working to restore full service across affected platforms, including MATLAB and Cloud Centre. MathWorks has also reported the attack to federal law enforcement agencies.

So far, the company has provided limited details regarding the breach. No ransomware group has also claimed responsibility, and there is no confirmation whether customer or employee data was compromised.

As of now, MathWorks has not offered further comments and has yet to respond to media inquiries.
