Gadget manufacturing and tech giant Samsung announced a new data breach incident that affected its customers who purchased from the Samsung UK online store between July 1, 2019, and June 30, 2020. The company’s security team discovered the breach earlier this month. Also, it revealed a pattern of exploited vulnerability that has compromised the company for the third time in two years.

Based on reports, the hacker who exploited a bug in a third-party application used by Samsung has executed the breach that the company discovered on November 13. Although specific details about the security flaw and the compromised application remain undisclosed, Samsung immediately notified affected customers.

Customers who purchase in the Samsung UK online store should be cautious starting this month.

According to the company, the compromise on their Samsung UK online store could have exposed the basic information of their customers. The notification confirmed that the breached data includes full names, phone numbers, and postal and email addresses. Luckily, Samsung claimed the hacker had not acquired financial information or credentials.

In addition, a Samsung spokesperson assured customers that the breach only impacts the UK, emphasising that US customers, employees, and retailers remain unaffected. The company has taken immediate action to address the security issue and has reported the incident to the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office.

This cybercriminal incident is the third data breach attack for Samsung in the past two years. In late July, hackers accessed and stole customer names, contacts, demographic information, dates of birth, and product registration data. Earlier this year, the notorious data extortion group Lapsus$ infiltrated Samsung’s network and stole confidential information, including the source code for Galaxy smartphones.

The repeated breaches on this tech giant have caused massive user concerns. Like many other widely known companies, Samsung continues to be a target for sophisticated cyberattacks.

The company reassures its customers that it remains committed to fortifying its security protocols to stop similar incidents in the future. However, the recurrence of such incidents raises concerns about the overall safety of customer data in the digital landscape.
