Recent reports revealed that the METRO wholesaler experienced several IT outages and store payment issues. This big-time international wholesale entity has disclosed these issues after a cyberattack occurred within its systems.

METRO’s IT response team has an ongoing investigation of the incident with third-party security experts’ cooperation. The company initiated the response to know the exact cause of the current disruption.

Based on reports, IT outages have become prevalent in numerous European countries, such as Austria, France, and Germany, this month.

METRO experienced a partial IT infrastructure outage of multiple technical services. The wholesaler giant also noted that its team has quickly responded to the attack by initiating a thorough study with the aid of separate cybersecurity experts.

The METRO wholesaler has employed traditional workflow to keep its operation running.

According to a spokesperson, the attack forced the METRO wholesaler to employ offline payment transactions. However, their online services are delayed indefinitely. The company emphasised that their customers could still order online through their web app and store, but users should expect delays as they are in the investigation stage.

The wholesaler giant has alerted law enforcement about this cybercriminal activity and will work hand-in-hand with them to identify the cause of the attack.

METRO is a massive international wholesale entity for customers in different sectors, such as catering, hotels, and restaurants. This company operates in about 30 nations worldwide and the home to nearly 100,000 employees. As of last month, the entity currently runs over 600 wholesale stores under the MAKRO and METRO brands.

Unfortunately, the company has yet to disclose information about the true nature of the cybercriminal activity. Hence, some researchers claimed that these attacks are commonly affiliated with ransomware.

A company representative said they would constantly try to analyse and monitor the current issue. METRO has also sympathised with the affected individuals and assured them that they would do their best to come up with a resolution for the attack.
