France Italy Hyundai Car Owners Data Breach Operation Disruption Phishing Fraud Prevention

Hyundai announced it suffered a data breach that affected its French and Italian car owners. The hackers might have also accessed the personal data of customers who booked a test drive.

Based on multiple reports, researchers spotted on a social media platform that the attack caused the exposure of diverse types of information. The confirmed sensitive data includes home addresses, email addresses, telephone numbers, and vehicle chassis numbers.

The notification letters also clarified that the attackers infiltrating Hyundai’s database did not reach or steal any financial details or identification numbers. The automobile company contacted IT experts to address the data breach attack. The attack has impacted its systems rendering them offline to contain the breach.

Hyundai also warned its customers to be wary of unwanted communications.

This South Korean car brand also advised Hyundai owners to carefully access unwanted emails since email addresses are part of the stolen data. These messages, such as SMS and emails, could be from phishers trying to collect more credentials for further attacks.

Hyundai Italia also added that their customers should verify any communication attempts from unknown users. In addition, emails could present themselves as part of the Hyundai group to increase legitimacy and deceive targets.

The car company branch in France disseminated the same cluster of notifications. These customers should protect their data as the threat actors could exploit the sensitive information for phishing campaigns.

Unfortunately, the current investigations could not identify the number of Hyundai customers affected by the data breach. Researchers have yet to specify how long the hackers stayed within the network and if the attack impacted additional countries.

The company will try to report additional details about the attack soon after its investigation concludes. This recent incident has not been the first cybersecurity issue on Hyundai. A couple of months ago, the company distributed emergency software updates on its car models after researchers discovered a USB cable hack that could allow carnappers to steal their units.
