Supercar manufacturer Ferrari disclosed a data breach incident in their IT systems after the threat actors demanded a ransom against them.

During the cybercriminal incident, the company notified its customers and relevant individuals that the threat actors had accessed a limited number of systems in their Information Technology environment.

This Italian luxury sports car manufacturing company has yet to disclose the nature of the attack. Still, many believed it could have been a ransomware attack or an extortion attempt. Some researchers also claimed that the attack could be purely an extortion campaign since the attackers gained access to the company’s network and demanded a ransom to not leak the stolen data.

Furthermore, the announcement revealed that Ferrari S.p.A., wholly owned by an Italian subsidiary, was directly contacted by a threat actor that demanded a ransom in exchange for the data related to client contact information.

Ferrari deployed an investigation immediately after receiving the ransom demand from the alleged stolen data.

The Italian company, Ferrari, has immediately investigated the attack with the aid of a third-party cybersecurity team. In addition, the company confirmed that the sensitive information includes names, addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers.

The company’s security team has yet to find proof that the hackers compromised critical data, such as payment details, bank account numbers, or essential information. It also adopted security measures to secure the infected systems and stated that the attack did not impact the company’s standard operations.

Relevant law enforcement agencies have also been informed, and a cybersecurity firm was teamed up to identify the scope of the attack’s impact.

The company also clarified that it would not participate in any ransom payments as its policy states that it will not pay such demands that will fund further criminal activities. Currently, the company will stick to their original plan of informing its clients and customers and continue investigating the cybercriminal incident.

Ferrari assured everyone that they would adopt new and more potent security protocols to thwart recent cyberattacks.
