The hackers, known as the Belarusian Cyber-Partisans, declared their cybercriminal operation on the KGB (Committee for State Security) late last week, which resulted in an ongoing website disruption. The organisation has not responded to the attack but stated that its website displayed a message stating that it is in the process of development.

The hackers announced their operation just a few days after Belarus changed its military policy, which included the option of responding with force to a cyberattack on one of its key infrastructures.

Earlier this week, the hackers published a list of the website’s administrators, database, and server logs on their Telegram channel that allegedly came from the affected KGB website. In addition, the group has allegedly been able to download the personal files of approximately 8,600 KGB agents.

The hackers have also created a Telegram bot that can identify Belarusian agents in images shared by users.

The Belarusian Cyber-Partisans have targeted the KGB for the past years.

In 2021, the Belarusian Cyber-Partisans revealed the personal information of certain KGB officers. Hence, the alleged leader confessed on state television that there had been attacks on his data and a systematic collection of information, which he blamed on foreign special services.

On the other hand, the recent attack on the KGB is a response to the agency’s chief, who publicly accused the group of organising attacks on the country’s essential infrastructure, including a nuclear power plant.

Therefore, the attackers retaliated after the statement through cyberattack and explained that they do not plan such attacks on nuclear plants as it is against their morality.

Furthermore, last week, the Belarusian Cyber-Partisans claimed to have targeted Grodno Azot, the country’s largest state-run fertiliser manufacturer, for suspected involvement in political persecution, sanction evasion, and human rights violations. These hackers claimed that their attack had disrupted the enterprise’s electricity-producing plant.

Belarusian Cyber-Partisans are notorious for executing cyberattacks on Russian and Belarusian businesses and state organisations.

The legitimacy and actual impact of the hackers’ attacks are still indeterminate since their victims do not publicly confirm such activities. Therefore, authorities expect this group to continue their campaigns if necessary for the deserving target.
