Authorities warn political parties about phishing attacks spike

German federal agencies published an advisory regarding the surge of phishing attacks directed towards political parties in relation to the forthcoming European Union elections. The Federal Office for Information Security and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution have raised alarm bells, attributing these attacks to state-sponsored hackers.

Based on reports, there has been a noticeable surge in these malicious activities, especially in anticipation of the impending European elections. These attacks, often in the form of phishing attempts, want to steal sensitive data or documents, posing a significant threat to the targeted entities.

As a precautionary measure, the relevant law enforcement agencies have contacted political parties to raise awareness about the potential risks of such hacks and subsequent data leaks.

Although the precise origins of these attacks remain undisclosed, the agencies have confirmed their affiliation with nation-state actors. Recent reports from a security firm have highlighted a Russian hacking campaign targeting political parties in Germany, linked to the state-sponsored hacking group APT29.

These plans include the creation of specialised teams that focus on electronic warfare and cyber defence. These activities show the importance of adapting to the evolving landscape of cyber threats.
