The scam unfolded with the creation of fake tokens, including GROK 2.0. This strategic move aimed to adopt trending topics that could attract careless buyers, setting the stage for the scammer’s scheme.

According to investigations, the Rug Pull scheme leverages the injection of funds into the token pool to create a deceptive illusion of legitimacy. Simulated trading activities, deftly orchestrated by the scammer, involved strategic trades between the WETH cryptocurrency and the counterfeit GROK token.
This tactic fabricated market activity successfully drew in investors, reaching a critical mass that allowed the scammer to execute the rug pull – withdrawing liquidity from the token pool and leaving investors wondering about significant losses.
Furthermore, the scam involved two smart contracts, each essential in artificially inflating the token’s volume. The function 0x521da65d executed 226 trades, while the contract at address 0x4b2a0290e41623fbfeb5f6a0ea52dc261b65e29b facilitated function 0xf029e7cf, boosting the token’s volume through swaps between WETH and GROK tokens.
The researchers noted that this incident underscores the risks in the cryptocurrency market. Hence, crypto enthusiasts should be constantly vigilant and diligent with their transactions.
