India IIB Insurance Information Bureau Cyberattack APT Policyholders Website Down Operation Disruption

Our threat researchers in iZOOlogic have recently gathered intelligence about a cyberattack incident targeting the networks of the Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) in India. According to investigations, the incident involved unidentified threat actors compromising critical data from the Indian agency.

Established in 2009, Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) is India’s single point for the entire insurance industry data. The agency facilitates the efficient functioning of the country’s insurance sector and protects the interests of policyholders and the common public by ensuring that data is available for real-time decision-making.

Reports say that the cybersecurity incident at Insurance Information Bureau is being addressed.

A spokesperson aware of the security incident on India’s IIB revealed that it is being handled and addressed at the highest level. The individual also shared that some data from the agency had been compromised, and the incident is ongoing as of this article.

There are no comments from IIB’s chief executive, and requests for updates have yet to be collected from the agency. Thus, it is not yet clear which data from the agency had been compromised in the cybersecurity issue, its scope, and its effect on the agency and all affected individuals.

Moreover, our researchers investigated the agency’s official website (iib[.]gov[.]in) to discover that it is currently inaccessible.

Threat researchers have been detecting continued attacks on institutions and companies in India. Recently, the country’s academic sector has reportedly been targeted by the notorious advanced persistent threat (APT) group Transparent Tribe.

Hacktivists groups have also been plaguing Indian websites with DDoS attacks and infecting them with trojans that could disrupt vital business operations in the country. In separate reports, India saw its highest number of cyberattacks targeting its government agencies last year.

With the rising rate of cybercrime events in the country, security experts strongly recommend combating them through stronger and more competent cybersecurity solutions.
