Russian hacktivists have allegedly attacked GSC Game World, the game developer of the highly anticipated “STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl” video game. Based on reports, the attackers stole some of the game’s assets during the cybercriminal campaign.
This Ukrainian game publishing company claimed that a community from a Russian social network environment was the culprit of the attack. Moreover, the group is allegedly blackmailing the firm by threatening to release the data of the much-awaited game. The gaming community expects the newly developed game to launch later this year.
The recent cyberattack against GSC Game World is one of the numerous attacks that have threatened them for the past year.
GSC Game World revealed that this new incident is the latest addition to the blackmail, cyber-aggression, and threat they experienced this past year. Russian hackers have allegedly deployed problems at them to taint their reputation as game developers.
The company also explained that these attempts are related to the current geopolitical dispute between Russia and Ukraine. The company emphasises that the stolen data of the Russian hackers are mostly outdated gaming data and a work-in-progress of the new game. Hence, users should not patronise the data leak.
On the other hand, the threat actors posted a message on a Russian social media website, revealing that they stole troves of data from the STALKER 2 material, such as storylines, cutscenes, maps, concept art, and more.
Some samples have also been released to prove the data breach claims. However, some stolen details remain a mystery since the actors want to use them to extort the company.
The hacktivist group has yet to reveal the price in exchange for the stolen data, but they demanded some conditions from the game developers. They also requested that the developers reconsider their behaviour towards players from Russia and Belarus and lift the ban of the NF Star user from the game’s Discord channel. The group wants the publisher to introduce Russian localisation for the upcoming game.
The attackers are giving the GSC Game World until March 15 to comply with their demands.
