The US midterm election experienced a DDoS attack that shut down several Mississippi state websites last week. The attack was the most hostile act that attempted to disrupt the election, and experts claimed there would be more soon.
Fortunately, the election committee assured everyone that their election system was secure and was not compromised by the attempt.
According to investigations, a pro-Russian threat group claimed the credit for the attack; fortunately, their actions have not interfered with the voting and counting processes.
A CISA senior official stated that their agency was aware of the admittance by the Russian threat group. However, they did not jump to any conclusions and did not make any attribution as to the attack’s specific culprit.
The agency noted that the attribution is very challenging for them since they have yet to discover evidence if these attacks came from a chain of other campaigns.
The Mississippi websites are one of many sites that are facing DDoS attacks.
The CISA official speculated that the DDoS attacks were not exclusive to the Mississippi websites since Russian threat actors are known for impacting wide-scale operations.
On the other hand, the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office revealed that they have yet to attribute the attack to any threat group. They stated that they would need more evidence to confirm the origin of the DDoS activity, which would then point them to a specific individual or group.
The election officials also dismissed numerous allegations regarding the ballot scanner issue in other states. However, the republicans, including former US President Trump, have stated multiple conspiracy allegations regarding the ongoing midterm elections.
As of now, the officials made it clear that they do not have any sightings of misconduct or illegal activity within the election. Their team has an ongoing investigation to resolve the issue.
The votes from the day the DDoS attacks occurred will be unofficial to eliminate all doubt about the results, but the officials said they would address the matter soon. They ask for additional time to clarify, verify, and certify the election results.
